Haverhill is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, located along the Merrimack River in the northeastern part of the state. It is approximately 35 miles north of downtown Boston and close to the New Hampshire border.
Haverhill was first settled in 1640 and officially incorporated as a town in 1641. It became a city in 1870.
Originally an agricultural community, Haverhill saw significant industrial development in the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in the shoe manufacturing industry. At one point, it was known as the “Queen Slipper City” due to its prominence in the production of women’s shoes. Today, Haverhill is a diverse community with a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas.
As of the 2020 U.S. Census, Haverhill has a population of approximately 65,000 residents.
